Call for Papers

Special Issue on

Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy and Functionalized Plasmonic Nanoparticles for Biomedical Applications

The discovery of the Raman scattering enhancement of molecules adsorbed on plasmonic nanoparticles (PNPs) is a landmark in the history of spectroscopic and analytical techniques. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has been confirmed as a powerful method to probe simple as well as complex molecules. Significant experimental and theoretical effort has been directed toward understanding the SERS effect and demonstrating its potential applications ranging from materials and environmental science through biology and medicine. Functionalized PNPs with controlled geometrical, optical, and surface chemistry properties are also the subject of intensive studies and applications in biology and medicine.

Despite decades of development, SERS technique is still in its infancy for biomedical applications and faces some challenges in practical applications. In addition, new insights into the unique properties of multifunctional PNPs have just recently started to emerge. The purpose of this special issue is to highlight these latest developments in both SERS technologies and PNPs for relevant biomedical applications. The special issue also calls for experts in the field of SERS and PNPs to discuss the most recent breakthroughs and potential impacts in related research fields. Original research papers and review articles are both welcome. Manuscripts will be internationally peer-reviewed. Topics we specifically seek to cover include but are not limited to the following:

ŸDesign, modeling and synthesis of novel SERS substrates for biomedical applications

ŸAdvanced SERS-based biosensing technique

ŸApplications of SERS in medical imaging and theranostics

ŸReliability and reproducibility of SERS substrates in real bio-environments

ŸProtocol development and data processing of SERS-based bio-analyte quantification

ŸClinical translation of SERS technique for in vivo applications

ŸDesign, synthesis and optical properties of PNPs with controlled size, shape, structure and surface morphology

ŸFunctionalization of PNPs for biomedical applications

ŸPNP-based nanocomposites for biosensing, diagnostics and therapy

ŸLuminescent plasmonic nanoclusters: synthesis, modelling, and bio-applications
